Welcome to the summer reading site for East Side Community! You will find suggestions for finding good books for summer reading, assignments for each grade, and all of the materials for New York Public libraries' summer reading activities in the public libraries. Please feel free to use the feedback form in the lower right hand corner to communicate directly with Andrea, the East Side librarian about the website.

Free Audiobooks This Summer!
Each week, there are 2 new audiobooks for teens released on Sora that you can keep forever!
- In Sora, open the menu (in the top-right corner).
- Select Add a library.
- Search for audiobooksync and select the library from the results.
- Enter the email address you used to sign up for SYNC.
Once the titles have been added to your shelf in Sora, you can listen to them again and again, for as long as you want – just make sure you don’t return them!

Getting a Public Library card!
You can get a library card from all 3 public library systems!
If you're 13 years old or older, you can sign up for a digital library card here at the New York Public Library link!
If you're 12 or younger, you can sign up for a digital library card from NYPL if you have a smart phone or tablet with apps:
1. Go to the app store on your device, and download SimplyE (The Library E-Reader)
2. Once it downloads, open it, and go to Settings on the bottom right of the screen
3. Click on Accounts, and then click on The New York Public Library.
4. Click on "Don't have a Library card?" Sign Up
5. Agree to the terms on the first page, click "Allow Once" to access your location and put in your address information and name on the next screens. You will be asked to make a username and pin--please pick something easy to remember.
6. Now you can browse and check out e-books and audiobooks!
Brooklyn Public Library is offering an online library card you can access with a computer.
Queens Public Library is also offering an online library card you can access with a computer.

- We Are Kid Lit Collective Diverse Summer Reading ListCheck out the lists for the last few years!
- NYPL Best Books for TeensThis list is amazing. And it takes you directly to the New York Public Library website to find the book!
- Best Books for Kids from NYPLThese great books were picked by NY Public Library librarians! The list includes picture books for young kids, but also lots of chapter books for middle graders.
- Lazy Readers ClubOnce you join (for free), this site helps you find books that are no more than 250 pages long!
- Young Adult Library AssociationThis is an organization of librarians who create great booklists every year. This website collects many of these booklists, with short descriptions of each book. It’s not pretty, but if you want something that will definitely be good, check it out.
- We Are Pride 2023 List from the Boston Public LibraryThis list includes 75 books that they recommend, spanning grades K-12. You can get all of these books at our public libraries!
- This List is Anti-RacistA wonderful list from a bookseller to give you ideas of what to get from the public library! And if you'd like to buy a book and support struggling independent bookstores, this is great resource, too.
- 100 Teen Books for Summer from Barnes & NobleYou don't need to buy the books to see what's popular right now from the bookseller Barnes & Noble!
- Goodreads: Summer Reading by MoodGoodreads has collected many adult-level books by mood for summer reading, if you're looking for more challenging but popular titles.
- I'm Here, I'm Queer. Now What Do I Read?This blog, by writer Lee Wind, collects lots and lots of books with GLBTQ main characters and story lines. Check the list on the right side of the homepage to see a list of books he reviews.
